Thanks to the incredible support of our school community, the John Rankin PTFA is investing over £25,000 this summer into exciting improvements across the school. Every pound has been raised through previous fundraising events and is being reinvested to create inspiring spaces and resources that will benefit children for years to come.
Take a look at the projects we’re delivering and see how your support is making a real difference.
Our new outdoor classroom will provide a dedicated space for lessons beyond the four walls of the classroom. Designed for use by the whole school, it will support outdoor learning, group activities, storytelling and curriculum enrichment, giving every child the opportunity to learn, explore and be inspired in a natural environment.
This summer, we’re transforming the FS2 outdoor area into an even more engaging space for learning and play. As part of the project, we’ll be improving the drainage to make the garden more accessible all year round, alongside introducing a wealth of new resources and play opportunities to inspire creativity, exploration and outdoor learning for our youngest children.
We’re creating a dedicated outdoor learning space for Year 1 and Year 2, designed to encourage creativity, collaboration and hands-on learning. With natural seating, learning resources and space for small group activities, it will provide an inspiring environment where children can explore the curriculum in the fresh air while developing confidence and curiosity.
Work will begin this summer on our exciting new Junior Surf Shack – a dedicated space designed especially for our older pupils. The first phase will focus on creating the foundations of this vibrant outdoor area, which will provide a place to socialise, relax, read and enjoy creative play. As the project develops, it will become a unique space that encourages wellbeing, independence and friendship throughout the school day.
The music room is being refreshed to create a bright, organised and inspiring space where creativity can flourish. With improved storage, dedicated areas for instruments and modern learning resources, the revamped room will support music lessons, performances and give every child the opportunity to develop a love of music.
The Nursery Garden is being refreshed with a brand-new mud kitchen and sandpit, creating even more opportunities for imaginative play, exploration and hands-on learning. These exciting additions will provide a fun, engaging outdoor environment where our youngest children can develop creativity, confidence and key early learning skills through play.
With just six weeks over the summer holidays, we’re prioritising the larger projects that require groundworks, diggers and significant volunteer labour while the school is empty. However, this is only the beginning.
Our investment in John Rankin doesn’t stop in September. Below are the next phase of projects that we’ll continue to develop and deliver throughout the new academic year as we work towards creating even more inspiring spaces for our children.
We’re creating a dedicated Reading Area and Quiet Zone to give children a calm space to read, relax and recharge during the school day. Designed with sensory elements and engaging books and activities, it will provide a welcoming environment that supports wellbeing, encourages a love of reading and offers a peaceful retreat for pupils who need a quieter space.
We’re planning to create a magical treehouse within our Forest School, providing children with an exciting space to explore, imagine and learn. Designed to encourage adventurous play, storytelling and outdoor discovery, the treehouse will become a unique feature that inspires curiosity, builds confidence and helps children connect with nature.
Our vegetable patches are in need of a little TLC, and we’re planning to bring them back to life. By refreshing the beds, improving the growing areas and adding new planting opportunities, we’ll create an engaging space where children can learn about nature, healthy eating and the journey from seed to harvest through hands-on experiences.
From September, we’ll be working closely with our new SENDCo and a dedicated parent working group to design and develop this exciting new space. Together, we’ll create a calm, supportive environment with sensory resources and purposeful activities that meets the needs of our pupils and helps every child feel safe, supported and ready to learn.
We haven’t forgotten our long-term goal of creating a dedicated running track for the school. This remains one of our biggest ambitions, and thanks to your continued support, we have already earmarked £10,000 towards making it a reality. While it will take further fundraising to reach our target, every event and donation brings us one step closer to delivering a lasting legacy that will benefit generations of John Rankin pupils.
You will see in the infant 3 beautiful willow domes planted. These will grow over the years to be perfect places for the chilren to explore.

The outdoor library gives children a calm space to read, relax and enjoy books outside. It encourages a love of reading while supporting wellbeing and friendship through shared stories.
The refreshed library space is a bright, welcoming place where children can explore books, discover new interests and enjoy quiet time. It’s helping to build a love of reading and a lifelong curiosity for learning.
With new classroom resources, our teachers can make learning even more hands-on and engaging. From creative tools to maths equipment, these supplies help every child learn, explore and succeed.
Previously donaated play equipment has made breaktimes more fun and active. Children are using their imagination, working together and enjoying being outdoors, helping them build confidence, friendships and teamwork skills.
The adventure playgrounds have had a substantial refresh to give children exciting spaces to climb, explore and challenge themselves. They encourage active play, problem-solving and co-operation, all while having loads of fun!
This cooking room lets children get hands-on with cooking, baking and making. It’s helping them learn practical skills, build independence and enjoy the fun of creating something from scratch.
